  • Folkestone – The end of the Leas Cliff Lift !

    After the St Nicolas Cliff Lift in Scarborough, it is now the turn of the Leas Cliff Lift in Folkestone to be closed by the local council because of it coast!
    Leas Cliff Lift was opened in 1885. It was a water powered funicular and was the last remaining Cliff Lift of Folkestone…
    As for the Babbacombe Cliff Lift, we may hope that an historic private society will be created to save and restore one of the most famous Cliff Lift of Great Britain!

    Folkestone – La fin du Leas Cliff Lift !

    Tout comme le funiculaire de St Nicolas à Scarborough, c’est maintenant le tour du funiculaire Leas Cliff Lift de Folkestone d’être définitivement fermé par les autorités locales pour cause de coûts trop élévés!
    Le funiculaire Leas Cliff Lift entra en service en 1885 et c’était un système à contre poids d’eau. C’était le dernier funiculaire de Folkestone encore en service.
    Comme pour le funiculaire de Babbacombe, on peut espérer qu’une société historique privée se créera pour sauver et restaurer un des plus célèbres funiculaires de Grande Bretagne!

     

  • Métro de Lyon – Ligne C à crémaillère

    Rappelons que la ligne C du métro de Lyon est le seul métro à crémaillère au monde!
    En 1974, il a remplacé l’ancien funiculaire qui allait de la Croix Paquet à la Croix Rousse et qui datait de 1891.
    En 1978, la crémaillère a été prolongée jusqu’à l’Hôtel de Ville et  en 1980 la ligne a été prolongée jusqu’à Cuire.

    Lyon Metro – Line C with cog wheel trains

    Line C is part of the Lyon Metro and it is also the only cog wheel Metro line!
    In 1974, cog wheel trains replaced the old funicular which linked Croix Paquet to Croix Rousse since 1891.
    In 1978, the cog wheel line was extended to Hôtel de Ville and in 1980 the line was extended to Cuire.

    Ce week end, un court passage à Lyon… juste le temps de faire quelques vidéos du funiculaire de Lyon Saint Jean – Saint Just.

    Le funiculaire Lyon Saint Jean – Fourvière était malheureusement fermé pour maintenance.

    A short stay in Lyon this week end, just the time to take some videos of the Funicular Lyon Saint Jean – Saint Just.

    Unfortunately the other funicular Lyon Saint Jean – Fourvière was closed for maintenance.

  • Kaprun disaster – “Fire on the Ski Slope”

    Here is the full 44′ “Fire on the Ski Slope” documentary television episode of “Seconds from Disaster“, a documentary television series on National Geographic Channel.
    “Fire on the Ski Slope” is about the Kaprun disaster. The Kaprun disaster was the fire that occurred in a funicular car in the tunnel of the Gletscherbahn 2 railway in Kaprun, Austria, on 11 November 2000. The disaster claimed the lives of 155 people, leaving 12 survivors  from the burning car. The victims were skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.
    This episode is really excellent, it is an exact report of the events and I think it is a very good way to learn and understand what happened in the Kaprun tunnel!
    This episode is only in english… sorry for not having any French translation.

    La catastrophe de Kaprun – “Fire on the Ski Slope” (le feu sur les pentes de ski)

    “Fire on the Ski Slope” est un excellent reportage de 44 minutes de la série de documentaires “Seconds from Disaster“, de la cha$ine de télévision National Geographic Channel.
    Le documentaire est sur la catastrophe de Kaprun… le 11 novembre 2000, le feu dans une voiture du funiculaire ‘Gletscherbahn 2’ à Kaprun en Autriche, qui provoca la mort de 155 personnes avec 12 survivants. Les victimes étaient des skieurs se rendant sur les pentes du glacier du  Kitzsteinhorn.
    Ce documentaire est vraiment excellent, il retrace de manières précises les évènements minutes par minutes. C’est un très bon moyen d’apprendre et de comprendre ce qui s’est passé dans le tunnel de Kaprun!
    Ce reportage est malheureusement en anglais… désolé de ne pas en avoir la version française.

  • Solution of Quiz #27 – Iya Onsen Hotel, Japan

    Yes the solution of quiz #27 is the Iya Onsen Hotel in the Shikoku Island , Japan .
    The hotel is located in the Iya Valley which is famous for its hot spring (Onsen means ‘hot spring’).
    The little boy is pissing just in front of the hotel and its incline railway.
    The incline railway is used to go down from the hotel to the river where are open-air bath which is 170 meters under the hotel.
    It takes 5′ and the gradient of the slope is 42°.

    Solution du quiz #27 – Iya Onsen Hotel, Japon

    Et oui la solution du quiz #27 c’est bien l’hôtel Iya Onsen dans l’île de Shikoku au Japon.
    L’hôtel est situé dans la vallée de l’Iya qui est célèbre pour ses sources chaudes (Onsen signifie ‘source chaude’).
    Le petit garçon pisse juste en face d’ l’hôtel et de son funiculaire.
    Le funiculaire de l’hôtel est utilisé pour se rendre au fond de la vallée où se trouvent des bains en plein air.
    Il faut 5′ pour y descendre sur une pente de 42°.
