  • Arosa – Tschuggen Coaster

    Arosa, canton of Graubünden (Switzerland)

    The Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa is currently building a new APM (Automated People Mover) system to link the hotel to the Tschuggenhütte in the heart of Arosa’s mountain ski slopes.

    This private APM system, called Tschuggen Coaster consists of two self-propelled, battery-operated coaster units leaning on a cog and  moving on suspended rails. The coaster climbs 150 metres across a 500 metre-long strut-supported railway line. Each unit is fully-automatic with 9 seated passengers. It will be reserved to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel customers.

    It is not a funicular, there is no cable, it is self-propelled… so it is comparable to a cog wheel railway! I wonder how these two cars can operate on this single track!

    The Tschuggen Coaster is the first concrete project of Coaster Verkehrssysteme Vertriebs Gmbh (Austria).

    It is planned to begin on December 1st, 2006.

    The grand hôtel Tschuggen à Arosa est en train de faire construire un nouveau système d'APM (Automated People Mover) pour amener les clients de l'hôtel à Tschuggenhütte en plein coeur des pistes de skis du domaine d'Arosa.

    Cet APM, appelé Tschuggen Coaster , consiste en deux unités autopropulsées par des batteries s'appuyant sur une crémaillère et roulant sur des rails suspendus. La voie montée entièrement sur pylones permet de monter de 150 mètres sur un parcours long de 500 mètres. Chaque voiture est entièrement automatique et peut emporter 9 passagers assis. Ce transport sera réservé aux clients de l'hôtel Tschuggen.

    Ce n'est pas un funiculaire, il n'y a pas de câble, les voitures sont autopropulsées… ce système peut dont être assimilé à un chemin de fer à crémaillère! Je me demande comment deux voitures peuvent circuler sur cette voie unique!

    Le Tschuggen Coaster est la première réalisation de la société autrichienne Coaster Verkehrssysteme Vertriebs Gmbh.

    Il doit entrer en service le 1er décembre 2006.

  • Some news about Southend Cliff Lift

    Southend is located on the north side of the Thames estuary, in the Essex County in England.The Southend Cliff Lift (See Google Map) built in 1912 and refurbished in 1990 has been closed since 2002 for further redevelopment with new station buildings built to Victorian style. Trees were removed around the funicular… too many trees in fact because it caused a landslip! It should re-open for Summer 2007.

    Quelques nouvelles du Southend Cliff Lift

    Southend est situé sur la rive nord de l'estuaire de la Tamise dans le Comté d'Essex en Angleterre.
    Le  funiculaire Southend Cliff Lift (voir Google Map) a été construit en 1912 et rénové en 1990. Il est arrêté depuis 2002 pour de nouveaux travaux dont la rénovations des deux gares de style Victorien. Des arbres ont été enlevés autour du funiculaire… trop d'arbres en fait car cela causa un glissement de terrain! Il devrait être remis en service pour l'été 2007.

    Southend Pier Railway 

    I cannot post an entry about Southend without telling some words about the Southend Pier Railway (See Google Map)!
    A remarquable 2360 yards railway which is entirely on a pier in the Thames estuary, the longest pier in the world!

    Je ne peux parler de Southend sans dire quelques mots au sujet du chemin de fer Southend Pier Railway (Voir Google Map)!
    Une chemin de fer exceptionnel puisqu'il parcourt entièrement la jetée de Southend qui mesure 2158 mètres, ce qui est le record du monde de la plus longue jetée!

  • An incline in the Dezaley Vineyard

    Un funiculaire dans les vignes du Dézaley


    Sugus found this incline in the Dézaley Vineyard which is a famous vineyard of Lavaux in the caton of Vaud between Lausanne and Vevey in Switzerland.
    It is the first time I know the existence of an incline in a vineyard! Most of time, in Switzerland, when there is a very steep vineyard, the grappes are moved down on small cog wheel monorails.

    Sugus a découvert ce plan incliné funiculaire dans le vignoble du Dézaley, le célèbre cru de Lavaux entre Lausanne et Vevey en Suisse.
    C'est vraiment la première fois que je vois un funiculaire spécialement mis en place pour les vignobles! La plus part du temps, en Suisse, quand il y a un vignoble en très forte pente les grappes sont descendues avec l'aide d'un petit monorail à crémaillère.     

    Médinette, a famous wine of Dézaley. Needless to say that i am a great lover of Swiss wines!
    Médinette, un célèbre vin du Dézaley. Inutile de dire que je suis un grand amateur de vins suisses!

  • Innsbruck – Last summer picts

    Martin Schönherr sent me pictures he took last summer of the the replacement work on the Hungerburg Bahn funicular. Martin Schönherr m'a fait parvenir les dernières photos, prises cet été, du chantier du funiculaire qui va remplacer le Hungerburg Bahn.
