Annie & Martha

The two cars have their own names. "Annie" is the name of the left (north) car, "Martha" the name of the right (south) car.

"Annie" and "Martha" are the two first names of Annie Martha Davies who lived in a cottage at the foot of the Funicular Railway. Her husband was one of the last workers in the slate quarry. When the Idealists started the Center for Alternative Technology in 1976 Annie Martha fully supported their aims, even allowing them to connect their television to her aerial. She travelled on the first train on the Funicular Railway, and the carriages were named in her memory following her death three or four years ago.
Inside the carriage
The carriages comprise only two doors each.
Inside the carriage, there is only one compartment with wooden terraced seats with a central staircase. This arrangement is unusual.
