Fribourg / Neuveville-Saint Pierre (NStP) 
Since October 1996, the funicular of Fribourg Neuveville-Saint Pierre is
out of order because of an axle breaking !
We were very worried for the future of the last water-counterweight
funicular of Switzerland.
This funicular is quite one century old and it is still in it original
state.
For several years the owner of the funicular, the Transports en commun de
Fribourg (TF), were thinking a several way to modernize it or to stop it
definitively.
The operating costs are too expensive (5 employees are necessary) and the
wooden cabins and the rails are worn-out.
The accident of October 1996 was a reason to be more worried than other
days! But... Miracle... the Transports en commun de Fribourg have finally
decided to renovate it in the original state! No abandonment, no
modernization, no automation...
I would like to thanks the Transports en commun de Fribourg for the
decision they have taken. A very intelligent decision.
The last water-counterweight funicular of Switzerland is safe!
