Old photos of Furka – Oberalp (1980)

On my web site of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway (DFB), a new page devoted to some old pictures of the Furka Oberalp (FO) circulating on the section Oberwald – Gletsch – Realp in 1980, a few years before the digging of the Furka tunnel and  the abandonment of this section. Follow the link below:

2011, this is the 100th birthday of the funicular Sierre Montana Crans (SMC)

Sierre Montana Crans (1911 - 2011)
Sierre Montana Crans (1911 - 2011)

During the first years of operation of the cable car, we had 52 minutes to get from Sierre to Montana with two sections and a transfer at Saint-Maurice-de-Laques. The journey time was reduced to 30 minutes early as the 1930s thanks to more powerful engines. In 1959, speed was further increased and the travel time was reduced to 22 minutes. In December 1997 was put into service the new funicular to conform to new safety requirements. Having reunited the two former sections into one, the new cable car now has a length of 4191 meters, making it the longest cable car in Switzerland. With a speed of 8 meters per second, it takes not more than about 12 minutes to connect Sierre to Montana.

To mark this centenary, I went to Sierra last April to make a small report and take some videos (if possible to see in Full HD and full screen).

Video 1
On this video you will see the bottom station at Sierre and a 9′ 30″ complete shot of a non-stop ascent from Sierre to Montana.

Video 2
On this video you will see two of the four old cars that are stored and displayed next to the station Bluche. Then follows the stop of a donward car at the new station Bluche followed by shots of the old station Bluche where was the passing loop of the second section of the old funicular. Finally, a sequence in the engine room of the upper station at Montana.

Video 3
In this video you will see the crossing of the two cars at the new siding. Then follows the passage of a car down to the new station of Saint-Maurice-de-Laques followed by ascending car that stops to pick up passengers at the same station. Note that the stop is optional and to be able to stop the right car that goes where you want to go, you must press a button up/down as you would for an elevator. Note also the driver of the car which controls the opening of the gate with a remote control. The driver is also responsible for selling tickets at stations between.

Video 4
In this video you will see a 10-minute sequence shot of the full non-stop descent from Montana to the station of Sierre.
