“A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire”

Yesterday, October 17 2010, on CBS News “60 minutes” there was an investigation about the famous and mysterious 100-year-old film “A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire” which shows Market Street, in San Francisco, shot from the front windows of a cable car. It was historically dated from 1905.
The investigation proved that this old film was shot not in 1905 but in 1906, just 4 days before the earthquake which occurred on April 18, 1906.

“La descente de Market Street avant l’incendie”

Hier, 17 Octobre 2010, sur CBS Nouvelles “60 minutes” il y avait une enquête sur le célèbre et mystérieux film vieux de 100 ans “La descente de Market Street avant l’incendie» (“A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire”), qui montre Market Street, à San Francisco, depuis la fenêtre avant d’un cable car. Il a été historiquement daté de 1905.
L’enquête a prouvé que ce vieux film a été tourné, non pas en 1905, mais en 1906, et seulement 4 jours avant le grand tremblement de terre survenu le 18 avril 1906.

On the repaired version you can see the arrival at the ferry terminal building which is the end of Market Street Cable Car line. You can see the turntable at the end of the line and the camera is still shooting while the carriage is turning of the turntable until it is facing Market Street in the other direction and on the second parallel track.
What an amazing document about life in the main street of San Francisco four days before 3000 persons killed !
Sur la version réparée, vous pouvez voir l’arrivée au terminal des ferries qui est la fin de Market Street et de la ligne du cable car. Vous pouvez voir la plaque tournante à la fin de la ligne et la caméra fonctionne toujours tandis que la voiture tourne avec la plaque tournant jusqu’à ce qu’elle à nouveau dans l’axe de Market Street mais dans le sens inverse  et sur la voie parallèle.
C’est vraiment un document extraordinaire sur la vie dans la rue principale de San Francisco quatre jours avant que 3000 personnes soient tuées!

At the end of the last film…. there is the same tracking shot on Market Street…. but with the destroyed buildings.

Le funiculaire Angels Flight de Los Angeles a été remis en service lundi 15 mars 2010 après plus de neuf ans d’arrêt.
Le 1er février 2001 un accident provoquait la mort d’un passager et en blessait sérieusement sept autres.
Le funiculaire a été modifié afin d’en améliorer fortement la sécurité.
Angels Flight funicular at Los Angeles just reopened on Monday March 15th, 2010 after having been stopped for more than nine years.
On February 1st, 2001 there was an accident… One passenger was killed and 7 injured.
Finally the funicular has been modified to significantly improve the security.

Death Tunnel – Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Le tunnel de la mort – Sanatorium de Waverly Hills

Ce matin, j’entends parler pour la première fois d’un hôpital américain abandonné et très connu pour être un hôpital hanté!
Il est situé à Waverly Hills près de Louisville dans le Kentucky (USA), le Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
Ce genre de lieu abandonné, ça m’a toujours attiré et me voilà parti dans une recherche fascinante.
Il s’agit d’un sanatorium qui a été construit en 1910, sur une colline au sud-ouest de Louisville, pour accueillir des malades atteints de tuberculose et ferma en 1962. Il réouvrit la même année mais comme hôpital gériatrique. En 1981 il dut fermer définitivement pour mauvais traitements aux patients.
Le lieu devint mythique et il est dit qu’il y eut jusqu’à 63.000 décès… et il est considéré aujourd’hui comme un des principaux lieux hantés des États Unis!
Et surprise… je découvre que le bâtiment principal du sanatorium possède un tunnel incliné de 150 mètres de long qui relie le rez-de-chaussée du bâtiment avec le bas de la colline en direction d’une voie ferrée en contrebas.
Ce tunnel incliné avait d’un côté un escalier et de l’autre un plan incliné muni de rails sur lequel un chariot tiré par un câble pouvait monter et descendre des charges. Ce tunnel était un moyen de se rendre au sanatorium sans emprunter la route. Pour éclairage et ventilation, le tunnel était équipé de plusieurs puits verticaux débouchant dans la forêt.
Le tunnel était aussi utilisé pour évacuer discrètement, aux yeux des autres patients, les corps des personnes décédées. La légende veut aussi que les corps aient été jetés directement dans le tunnel en pente!
Le tunnel a pour nom  “Death Tunnel” tunnel de la mort) et pour surnom “Body Chute” (la chute des corps)!

Death Tunnel – Waverly Hills Sanatorium

This morning I heard for the first time about of a deserted hospital which is very famous to be a haunted hospital!
It is located at Waverly Hills near Louisville, Kentucky (USA), the Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
This kind of deserted places always fascinates me a lot so I made some research about it.
In fact it is a sanatorium which was built in 1910 on a hill, south-west Louisville, to accommodate tuberculosis patients. It closed in June 1962. It reopened the same year but as a geriatrics hospital. In 1981 it was forced to close allegedly due to patient abuse.
The place became a mythical place with some urban legends. One of them says that “63,000 deaths” occurred at the Sanitorium. The deserted building is today one of the most famous haunted place of USA!
During my research I discovered that under the old building there is an inclined tunnel (150 meters length) which links the first floor to the bottom of the hill near a railroad.
On one side of the inclined tunnel there are steps and on the other side  there is an inclined plane on which there were rails and a carriage which was pulled by a motorized cable to carry supplies.
The tunnel was a way to reach the building without using the main road. The tunnel was lighted and ventilated by some vertical air ducts leading from the roof of the tunnel to above ground level.
The tunnel was used to discreetly evacuate the bodies of the dead patients away in full view of other patients. Another urban legend says that the bodies were tossed and thrown on the slope of the tunnel!
The name of the tunnel is “Death Tunnel” or “Body Chute)!
