Here is an old picture ( circa 1910 ) from the funicular which was linking Luchon ( Haute -Garonne , France ) to the Hotel Restaurant La Chaumière.
It was built in 1894 and originally (photo) it worked with a water ballast counter weight. Between the rails , a Riggenbach rack was used for braking the descent.
Note the interesting feature of the first funicular La Chaumière : each of the two cars was traveling on his own track… indeed the two rails of each track are interleaved with the two rails of the other track . Despite the 36 centimeters between the two tracks, the two cars were using the same rack except at the siding where the rack is divided into two .
The funicular was renovated and electrified in 1955.
In 1970, a collapse of the hotel terrace and canopy of the funicular top station led to the permanent closure of the hotel and its funicular.
Today, the cable car and the hotel are still visible but in ruins. Only the lower funicular station is almost in a good shape.
