Presentation
Zagreb funicular is one of the shortest funiculars on the world -
the length of the track is only 66 meters! The need for a mean of transport
that would connect different parts of the town appeared when Zagreb started
to developed around historical nucleus on the hill - Upper town. The upper
station was build few meters away from the southern towns gate Dverce
(now demolished) and fortification tower Lotrscak.

The track ends at the lower station
that is 30.5 meters lower and 66 meters away from the upper one. The lower
station is situated where monumental wooden stairs used to be - at the end
of Tomiceva street, which connect station with Ilica, the most important
and the most crowded street of the city. The Budapest funicular probably
served as a model for Zagreb funicular due to the political unification
of the time. The funicular was designed by D. W. Klein from Osijek after
marketing analysis which show that most people used Bregovita street (today
Tomiceva street) to get to the Upper town. |
