A new rack train in France!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Yes… this is official! There will be a new rack train in France!
I know what you will say… "it will be at Villard-de-Lans with the old Ficelle from Lausanne" (see these articles)… well… I will say "NO!"
The project of a new rack train at Villard-de-Lans is almost discarded… some experts concluded that it would be toocostly, too restrictive and outdated! There will be a great probability that the old swiss carriages will be statically used!

The new french rack train will be at the Puy-de-Dôme (Auvergne)!

On Monday January 28, 2008 the french "Puy-de-Dome" regional Department signed with the canadian SNC-Lavalin to build the new Puy-de-Dôme rack train!

The works will begin in August 2009 and the opening is planed for beginning of Summer 2012.

If you don't know where the Puy-de-Dôme is… it is here!
The Puy-de-Dôme is a 1,464 meters old volcano near the city of Clermont-Ferrand. (Wikipedia)
Don't forget that from 1907 till 1926, a steam train was going to the Puy-de-Dome summit… it was not a cogwheel train but it used the Hanscotte (inspired from Fell system) central rail system.

Villard-de-Lans - the town council approved the rack train project!

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Villard-de-Lans, Isère, France.

On January 12th, 2006, the town council of Villard-de-Lans approved the project of the new rack train from Villard-de-Lans to the new ski resort, which will be built, end 2008, above Le Balcon de Villard.

The rolling stock of the two cog wheel lines : Lausanne-Ouchy (LO) and Lausanne-Gare (LG) will be give up to the french town after January 22, 2006 which will be the last day of "La Ficelle" !

The rolling stock will be stored by Tensol Rail SA, a Swiss company which will be also in charged for the transfer to Villard-de-Lans when it will be necessary.

Villard-de-Lans will be in charge to remove asbestos from the cars.

It is funny to know that the city of Turin thought to get back La Ficelle to replace the rolling stock of the Superga rack train ! Unfortunately for Turin, the gauges of the two trains are not the same !

It is interesting to know that an anonymous letter, sent by a person who owns high European administrative functions at Brussels, accuses the Villard-de-Lans municipality to have managed this project without any serious financial studies.

I personally received this letter; I know also that "24 heures", the Swiss newspaper from Lausanne, received the same letter!

Today, a delegation of the Villard-de-Lans Council met the Transport Lausannois managers to study the transfer of the rolling stock to France.

Villard-de-Lans is located on the top of the Vercors mountain, in France near Grenoble.

The Villard-de-Lans Council has a project to build a new cog wheel train to serve Villard 1300, a new sky ressort, which will be built, end 2008, above Le Balcon de Villard.
