La rampe sud du Lötschberg, c’est la ligne du BLS (Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon) entre l’ancien tunnel du Lötschberg et Brig surtout au moment où elle débouche dans la vallée du Rhône pour rejoindre Brig en une lente descente comme une avion en approche finale d’un aéroport. La vue est magnifique sur toute la vallée du Rhône et les sommets valaisans. La ligne a été mise en service en 1908 et avec ses multiples ouvrages d’arts (tunnels et viaducs) c’est un véritable chef d’Å“uvre de réalisation ferroviaire.

Personnellement je la considère toujours comme la plus belle ligne de chemin de fer de Suisse.

L̦tschberg South Ramp РSevistein Tunnels

The Lötschberg South Ramp, this is the BLS (Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon) railroad between the old Lötschberg top tunnel and Brig mostly when the railway comes out in the Rhone Valley to reach Brig with a long descent  like an airplane in final approach of an airport. The lookout to the Rhone valley and the Alps summits is wonderful . The railroad was opened in 1908 with a lot of engineering structures like tunnels and viaducts. This a real railroad masterpiece.

Personally I still consider it is the most beautiful railroad of Switzerland.

Voici deux vidéos que j’ai faites en juillet 2009, elles représentent la quasi totalité de la montée de la rampe sud du Lötschberg depuis Brig jusqu’à Goppenstein.

La ligne BLS continue évidemment par l’ancien tunnel de faîte du Lötschberg puis Kandersteg, Frutigen, Spiez, Thun et terminus à Berne.

Here are two video I took in July 2009. They cover quite the totality of the Lötschberg South Ramp between Brig and Goppenstein.

Of course, the BLS railroad continues after Goppenstein… with the old Lötschberg top tunnel, Kandersteg, Frutigen, Spiez and end of the line at Bern.

Les tunnels de Sevistein / Sevistein Tunnels

Parmi les nombreux tunnels de la rampe sud, les tunnels de Sevistein I et II (repère G sur Google Maps) furent construits respectivement en 1908 et 1911 mais un glissement de terrain dans ces tunnels obligèrent la compagnie à un creuser un troisième plus long et plus profond dans la montagne afin de remplacer les deux premiers. C’est ainsi que le tunnel Sevistein III fut mis en service en 1915 et les tunnels Sevistein I et II furent abandonnés mais pas complètement puisqu’ils furent très vite utilisés par l’armée suisse pour en faire des dépôts de munition. Près de l’entrée du tunnel Sevistein III, l’armée suisse a construit un quai qui permet de transborder du matériel depuis la ligne BLS vers une voie Decauville qui dessert les dépôts de munition des tunnels Sevistein I et II.

Andreas Gossweiler s’est baladé récemment le long du sentier de la rampe sud du Lötschberg et nous a ramené ces 6 clichés très intéressants des deux tunnels abandonnés Sevistein I et Sevistein II avec la voie Decauville qui relie les deux tunnels à la ligne BLS à voie normale.

Among the large number of tunnels, Sevistein tunnels I and II (marker G on Google Maps) were respectively built in 1908 and 1911 but because of a landslide a new tunnel longer and deeper in the mountain, Sevistein III, was built to replace the two first tunnels. Sevistein III was opened in 1915 and Sevistein I and II were deserted but not really because they were utilized by the Swiss Army as munitions stores. Beside the Sevistein III tunnel entrance, the Swiss Army built a transshipment pier between the BLS normal gauge track and a Decauville track which goes to Sevistein I and II.

Andreas Gossweiler went for hiking along the Lötschberg South Ramp Trail and he took those 6 very interesting photos of the two deserted tunnels, Sevistein I and II, with the Decauville track which the two tunnels to the BLS normal gauge track.

Les sentiers de randonnée et la rampe sud du Lötschberg

Le plus connu des sentiers de randonnée c’est bien sûr le sentier de la rampe sud du Lotschberg. Il va de Hohtenn à Lalden en longeant la rampe du chemin de fer. Depuis Brig on peut prendre le BLS RegioExpress jusqu’à Hohtenn puis rejoindre Lalden par le sentier en un peu moins de 6 heures de marche.

The most well known trail of course it is the Lötschberg South Ramp Trail. It goes from Hohtenn to Lalden following the BLS ramp. From brig, take the BLS RegioExpress to Hohtenn then join Lalden by the path… it takes less than 6 hour.

Sentier de randonnée de la rampe sud du Lotschberg / Lötschberg South Ramp Trail

Personnellement je rajouterais une autre randonnée qui me tient particulièrement à cœur, le vieux sentier du col de la Gemmi (Gemmipass).

Depuis Brig, se rendre en train et car postal jusqu’à Leukerbad. De là, la randonnée consiste à se rendre à Kandersteg en franchissant le Gemmipass (2314 m) à pied évidemment parce qu’il y a aussi un téléphérique pour les paresseux. Le chemin du col de la Gemmi est un des plus beaux sentiers de Suisse. Historiquement c’était une des rares moyens de relier le Valais à l’Oberland bernois. C’est raide mais c’est magnifique. Une fois arrivé à Kandersteg, le retour à Brig se fait évidemment en train avec le BLS et la rampe sud du Lötschberg.

Personally I know another great trail, the old Gemmi Trail (Gemmipass).

From Brig, go to Leukerbad by train and bus. From Leukerbad, climb the Gemmi cliff using the historical path to the Gemmi pass (2314 m), do not take the aerial cable way of course! Then go to Kandersteg. At Kandersteg, for the way back, take the BLS RegioExpress to brig. This historical path was one of the only way to link Valais to Bernese Oberland. It is very steep, not easy, but it is really wonderful.
