Bà Nà Hills – the first funicular in Vietnam

April 26, 2014, the first funicular in Vietnam was put into service on  Ba Na Hills, 42 km west of Da Nang .
Ba Na mountains rise 1485 meters above sea level . In 1919, the French Indochina Annam create a climate station at the summit of Mount Ba Na in the same way they had created the climate station of Dà Lat north of Saigon.
During Vietnam war , the urban center of Ba Na was completely destroyed by the bombing.
It was not until 2000 that the city of Da Nang decided to redevelop the Ba Na mountain and was built in 2004 Linh Ung Pagoda, a large white statue of Buddha and the great Ba Na Hills resort where two gondolas were built. In 2013, Doppelmayr built a third gondola 5.7 km long with an altitude difference of 1,368 meters.
In 2013, Garaventa at Ba Na Hills began construction of a long 400 meters funicular consisting of two ‘old style ‘ cars, red and yellow, inspired by Polybahn Zürich funicular and has been put into service on last Saturday by Da Nang authorities.

Da Lat train station – Solution of Quiz #26

Yes… the lounge of Quiz #26, this is the waiting room of the Da Lat train station (Vietnam)!

Da Lat is a very famous touristic place in Vietnam. It is located on a 1500 meters hight plateau in the canter of the country.
This plateau was dicovered in 1893 by a french-swiss scientist Alexandre Yersin who first built a sanitarium there. He was a member of Louis Pasteur team and he first prepared the first anti-pest serum. He is really unknown in France but he is still revered in Vietnam! It is interesting to know that the only streets in Vietnam which still keep their original french names are ‘Louis pasteur’ and ‘Alexandre Yersin’ streets!
Da Lat became a climatic resort for the colonists from the french Indochine becaume the weather is very healthy and temperated all year long. The french colonists decided to build a railroad to link this high level plateau to the sea and the Saigon – Hanoï railroad.
The railroad started from Phan Rang in 1903 and reached Da Lat in 1932 only. The railroad was 84 kilometers length with a difference of level of near 1500 meters. There were three cog wheel sections and five tunnels. The Chemins de Fer d’Indochine bought steam locomotives and six of them were from the Swiss company Furka Oberalp when the line was electrified.
The railroad survived to the WWII and to the decolonization war which drove out the Frenchcolonist in 1955.
The second vietnamese war fatal for the railway. The railway was attacked by the Viet Cong which did many acts of sabotage. The line was stopped in 1972 and was completely dismanteled in one year only et the rails were reclaimed!
The locomotives were abandonned to the rust and the corrosion.

1990, The Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Club (founded in 1983 to save the line between Realp and Oberwald which was threatened by dismantling by Furka Oberalp railways in Switzerland) went to Da lat to bring back to Switzerland the abandoned locomotives… the goal was to make full restorations and to make them re-operated on this preserved railway section where they operated before 1947! Now these locomotives, with amazing destiny, are a great succes on the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke (DFB)!
(Personally I am member of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Club since 1991…).

Today, from the old railroad Phan Rang (Thap Cham) – Da Lat, only remains a small 6 kilometers section which is sill in operation… mainly for the tourists between Da Lat and Trai Mat.
The main remain of this prestigious cog wheel railway, of course it is the wondeful Da Lat station… built in 192 by two architects who drew their inspiration from the Deauville train station in France.

Datanla falls’s Alpine Coaster

Alpine Coasters are quite famous now and you may find many of them in mountain resorts where they are used as summer sled attractions.
They are built by Wiegand, a German company, they are small roller coasters where individual sleds are pulled up to the top of the track with an automatic cable car system. Then the sled is dropped in a  steep slope with many curves.

Datanla Falls

Near Da Lat (Vietnam), there is a very interesting Alpine Coaster.
There, the Alpine Coaster is used both as a thrill attraction and also as a real transportation system. The Alpine Coaster is used to reach and visit Datanla Falls which at the bottom of a gorge. As the contrary of the other coasters, the departure is located at the top of the track and the sleds have first to go down on the slope to reach the bottom of tha track at Datanla Falls. There you leave the sled to visit the falls and after your visit you take another sled which takes you back uo to the top with the cable car system which is a real funicular.
