Besançon, the other funicular !

Every body knows the funicular of Besançon (France) which is located near the Bregille Fort. It was definitely closed in 1987. I published an article about it in 1999. Now it is currently renovated by les Amis du Funiculaire de Besançon… (  47°14'29.32"N / 6° 2'16.50"E).

But who knows the other funicular of Besançon?
It is also located in the same area, under the Bregille Fort and apparently it was built by someone who is good with one's hand to reach private houses along steps.

It is composed of a trolley with 4 lateral seats without possibilities to load freight. The four wheels (small at front, large at rear) are rolling inside U rails.

In the trolley, a command is linked to the engine with an aerial electric cable suspended to a carrying cable. When the trolley is moving, a kind of pantograph pushes the electric cable.

Apparently there is no brake under the trolley.

Home built funicular in Tennessee

Martin Hodge built its own funicular to link his house to the bank of the lake. It is located in the U.S. in east Tennessee.

Larry Berg's funicular (Murphy, Oregon)

Jeff Johnson's funicular (Butler, Tennessee)

A Do It Yourself Funicular

Jeff Johnson just informed me about these two videos about an inclined lift he built from scratch for his house at Butler on Watauga Lake, in the Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee (USA).

His dad and him have worked on it for about 3-4 months, and it took about 8 weekends for the “site work” and probably 2 weeks for the controls.
Bravo Jeff!

Bravo Jeff!
