Reopening of Southend Cliff Lift

At last, the Southend Cliff Lift has reopened on Tuesday 25th May 2010!
It reopened with a new carriage, a new tracks, a new winding gear and electrical and control systems.
The Cliff Lift was originally opened for the first time on August Bank Holiday Monday 1912. The Lift replaced one of the first examples of a moving walkway in the country that was installed in 1901, Although a radical and innovative idea it proved to be noisy, uncomfortable and unreliable.
The Cliff Lift is a true counter-balanced funicular railway, the counter-weight ingeniously located under the carriage running on a separate track. The Lift was constructed by Waygood and Co. and was an immediate success.
In 1990 further improvements were carried out including a third new carriage with side mounted door and new access ramps that improved access for pushchairs and the disabled. In 2003 a malfunction with the counter-weight brought operations to a halt and the Cliff Lift was out of action for a period of 7 years. Investigations revealed major corrosion to the structure that would take some time and money to correct.
In the meantime Southend-on-Sea Borough Council received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the Cliff Gardens including the Lift stations. The work on the stations including new roofs and decorative ironwork was completed in 2006.

Réouverture du Southend Cliff Lift

Le funiculaire Southend Cliff Lift a finalement été enfin remis en service le mardi 25 mai 2010!
L’unique voiture a été changée ainsi que la voie, les poulies et les systèmes de contrôles électriques.
Le funiculaire avait été mis en service pour la première fois en août 1912. Il avait remplacé un des premiers systèmes d’escalier mécanique du pays qui avait été mis en service en 1901 bien que très innovant mais qui été finalement très bruyant, inconfortable et peu sûr.
Le nouveau funiculaire est un vrai système à contrepoids, celui-ci se déplace sur une voie spéciale située sous la voie de la voiture. Le système avait été conçu par Waygood and Co. et fut un succès immédiat.
En 1990 la voiture fut changée pour la troisième fois avec l’ajout d’une porte latérale et l’accessibilité aux fauteuils roulants. En 2003 un problème sur le contrepoids obligea à arrêter l’exploitation du funiculaire. Des examens révélèrent de gros problèmes de corrosion au niveau de la structure qui nécessitèrent du temps et de l’argent pour être réparés au bout de 7 années. Entre temps la municipalité de Southend-on-Sea récolta des fonds de l’Heritage Lottery Fund pour restaurer les jardins et le funiculaire. Les deux stations ont été restaurées en 2006.

Hastings East Hill – The modernization

Good news… at HASTINGS, the EAST HILL Cliff Railway is stopped for a complete modernization.
The two carriages are being replaced but the chassis are being retained and overhauled. The track is being cleared of weeds etc. The control panel is being replaced.
The Reopening will be in the New Year 2010.
LECS (UK) LTD is doing this modernization as it already did the Babbacombe Cliff Lift modernization in 2005.
The next modernization of LECS (UK) LTD :
HASTINGS WEST Cliff Lift
The control panels are being replaced. Project starts in March 2010
SOUTHEND Cliff Lift
The structure has been overhauled and the new track is being installed at the end of November. A new carriage on the existing chassis has been built and the control panel will be replaced.
LIZARD Cliff Lift:
A new carriage is being installed on the original chassis and again the control panel is being replaced along with a complete new motor and gearbox.
Project starts in March 2010.

HASTINGS EAST HILL – La modernisation

Bonne nouvelle… à HASTINGS, le funiculaire EAST HILL vient d’être arrêté pour une rénovation complète.
Les deux voitures vont être remplacées mais les châssis vont être conservés après rénovation. Les voies vont être nettoyées. Le panneau de contrôle va être remplacé.
La réouverture est prévue pour la nouvelle année 2010.
C’est LECS (UK) LTD qui est en charge de cette modernisation comme elle avait déjà fait celle de Babbacombe Cliff Lift en 2005.
Les prochaines modernisations de LECS (UK) LTD :
HASTINGS WEST Cliff Lift
Le panneau de contrôle va être remplacé. Début du projet en mars 2010.
SOUTHEND Cliff Lift
Les structures vont être révisées et une nouvelle voie va être installée à la fin novembre 2009. Une nouvelle voiture va être installée sur le châssis existant et le panneau de contrôle va être remplacé.
LIZARD Cliff Lift:
Une nouvelle voiture va être installée sur le châssis d’origine et le le panneau de contrôle va être remplacé. Un nouveau moteur et une nouvelle boîte de vitesses vont être installés.

Folkestone – The end of the Leas Cliff Lift !

After the St Nicolas Cliff Lift in Scarborough, it is now the turn of the Leas Cliff Lift in Folkestone to be closed by the local council because of it coast!
Leas Cliff Lift was opened in 1885. It was a water powered funicular and was the last remaining Cliff Lift of Folkestone…
As for the Babbacombe Cliff Lift, we may hope that an historic private society will be created to save and restore one of the most famous Cliff Lift of Great Britain!

Folkestone – La fin du Leas Cliff Lift !

Tout comme le funiculaire de St Nicolas à Scarborough, c’est maintenant le tour du funiculaire Leas Cliff Lift de Folkestone d’être définitivement fermé par les autorités locales pour cause de coûts trop élévés!
Le funiculaire Leas Cliff Lift entra en service en 1885 et c’était un système à contre poids d’eau. C’était le dernier funiculaire de Folkestone encore en service.
Comme pour le funiculaire de Babbacombe, on peut espérer qu’une société historique privée se créera pour sauver et restaurer un des plus célèbres funiculaires de Grande Bretagne!

Southend-on-Sea – The Cliff Lift being replaced

The Southend-on-Sea Borough Council finally decided to repair the cliff lift and to replace the old car by a new one to comply with the Disability Discrimination act.
The main carriageway supporting the 4ft 6in gauge track and 1ft 9in gauge counterbalance track is covered in scaffolding and the entire structure is being repaired with track to be replaced.

Good news! Hope that Southend will be an exemple to save the St Nicholas Cliff Lift at Scarborought!

Southend-on-Sea – L’ascenseur est en cours de remplacement

La municipalité de Southend-on-Sea a finalement décidé de remettre en service l’ascenseur mais en remplaçant la cabine par une nouvelle afin de respecter la charte sur l’accessibilité des transports aux personnes à mobilité réduite.
La voie est actuellement recouverte par une bâche pour cacher les travaux de remplacement de la voie.

Bonne nouvelle! Espérons que Southend soit un exemple pour sauver le funi de St Nicolas à Scarborought!

Scarborough – Photos of St Nicholas Cliff Lift

Phil Greaves sent me some new photos of St Nicholas Cliff Lift taken on July 7th, 2007.
The funicular is still stopped with the two cars together at the middle of the inclined plane!
A simple notice on the top and bottom stations says "The St Nicholas Cliff Lift is Closed Until Further Notice"…

Le funiculaire est toujours arrêté avec ses deux cabines côte à côte au centre du plan incliné!
Sur les deux gares, inférieure et supérieure, est affiché la simple mention "Le funiculaire Saint Nicholas est arrêté jusqu'à nouvel ordre"…

The St Nicholas Cliff Lift is closed!

Scarborough, England.

St Nicholas Cliff Lift is closed for safety reasons.
£445,000 are needed to meet health and safety standards but the Scarborough Borough Council cannot afford such amount.
There is currently a petition being signed in the town to save the lift.
Today only two funiculars are still in used out of five!

Le funiculaire St Nicholas est arrêté pour raison de sécurité.
Il faut £445,000 pour pouvoir le mettre aux normes de sécurité et la municipalité de Scarborough n'a pas les moyens.
Une pétition circule actuellement en ville pour la sauvegarde du funiculaire.
Il ne reste actuellement que deux funiculaires en services sur les cinq qu'a compté la ville de Scarborough.

The local Civic Society are running a petition in the town to object to closure but there doesn't appear to be any details on their website or how you could add your name on-line. Their site is at http://www.scarboroughcivicsociety.org.uk/ and a contact is adrianperry@talktalk.net

Some news about Southend Cliff Lift

Southend is located on the north side of the Thames estuary, in the Essex County in England.The Southend Cliff Lift (See Google Map) built in 1912 and refurbished in 1990 has been closed since 2002 for further redevelopment with new station buildings built to Victorian style. Trees were removed around the funicular… too many trees in fact because it caused a landslip! It should re-open for Summer 2007.

Quelques nouvelles du Southend Cliff Lift

Southend est situé sur la rive nord de l'estuaire de la Tamise dans le Comté d'Essex en Angleterre.
Le funiculaire Southend Cliff Lift (voir Google Map) a été construit en 1912 et rénové en 1990. Il est arrêté depuis 2002 pour de nouveaux travaux dont la rénovations des deux gares de style Victorien. Des arbres ont été enlevés autour du funiculaire… trop d'arbres en fait car cela causa un glissement de terrain! Il devrait être remis en service pour l'été 2007.

Southend Pier Railway

I cannot post an entry about Southend without telling some words about the Southend Pier Railway (See Google Map)!
A remarquable 2360 yards railway which is entirely on a pier in the Thames estuary, the longest pier in the world!

Je ne peux parler de Southend sans dire quelques mots au sujet du chemin de fer Southend Pier Railway (Voir Google Map)!
Une chemin de fer exceptionnel puisqu'il parcourt entièrement la jetée de Southend qui mesure 2158 mètres, ce qui est le record du monde de la plus longue jetée!

Babbacombe Cliff Railway – 80th anniversary celebrations

Torquay (Devon, England), April 1st 2006.Last Saturday April 1st 2006 was the 80th anniversary celebration day of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway. I was informed by David Cooper (LECS) and I decided to spend the week end in Torquay to be present at this event! I took the flight Paris-Exeter on Friday evening.The Cliff Railway was taken out of service on September 30th for a complete revision and for the refurbishment of the two carriages.
It was supposed to reopen on April 1st 2006. Unfortunately, some days before, the hauling rope failed and one carriage rolled down to the bottom of the hill.
The chassis was damaged and the car was removed to be repaired.

In spite of this accident, the 80th anniversary celebration day was not postponed. The funicular was out of order with only displayed car.

I thanks Judy and John Ayres, Mr & Mrs J. Dann and Arthur Christian from the Friends of Babbacombe Cliff Railway for their humour and kindness!

PS… Well, I still have some questions to David (Cooper)…
Continental funicular carriages are mostly equiped with overspeed brakes which are jaws which squeeze a rail in case of overspeed of the carriage… the carriage can stop in a few meters only!
What about such a brake on Babbacombe Cliff railway carriages?
Is there an emergency brake on the carriages?
I see that there is some kind of third rail between the two rails… is there any overspeed brake on this third rail?
If so, why this emergency brake did not operate when the carriage rushed down the slope?

Babbacombe Cliff Railway – Cérémonies du 80 ème anniversaire

Torquay (Devon, Angleterre), 1er avril 2006.

Samedi dernier 1er avril 2006 a été célébré le 80 ème anniversaire du Babbacombe Cliff Lift.
J’ai été informé de cet évènement par David Cooper (LECS) et j’ai décidé de passer le week end à Torquay pour être présent. J’ai pris le vol Paris-Exeter du vendredi soir.

Le funiculaire était arrêté depuis le 30 septembre 2005 pour une révision complète et pour la rénovation des deux voitures.
Il devait être remis en service le jour de son 80 ème anniversaire malheureusement quelques jours avant l’inauguration le câble porteur eut une défaillance ce qui provoca la chute d’une voiture qui vint heurter la gare basse en endommageant le chassis de la voiture.
La voiture endommagée fut enlevée pour être réparée.
Malgré cet accident, la cérémonie d’anniversaire eut lieu mais avec une seule voiture était présente et bien entendu le funiculaire ne fonctionnait pas.

Je remercie plus particulièrement Judy & John Ayres, Mr & Mrs J. Dann et Arthur Christian des Friends of Babbacombe Cliff Railway pour leur humour et gentillesse.

PS. J’ai quand même encore quelques questions pour David (Cooper)…
Les funiculaires continentaux, en majorité, sont équipés de freins parachute qui consiste en de fortes mâchoires qui viennent automatiquement serrer un des rails en cas de survitesse d’une cabine, ce qui permet à calle-ci de s’arrêter en quelques mètres seulement.
Est-ce qu’il y a de tels freins sur les cabines du Babbacombe Cliff railways?
Il y a une sorte de troisième rail entre les deux autres rails, est-ce qu’il y a un système de sécurité qui utilise ce troisième rail pour arrêter la voiture en cas de survitesse.
Si oui, pourquoi n’a-t-il pas fonctionné lorsque le voiture a dévalé la pente?
