A funicular in the middle of Cambodian–Thai border dispute

Cambodia and Thailand are in conflict since June 2008 following a disagreement over the demarcation of their common border.
Since June 2008, the Thai army occupies the Khmer temple of Preah Vihear located in Cambodian territory, and claimed by Thailand, on the edge of the plateau formed by the Dangrek mountain range which is the natural border to the north of Cambodia. The Preah Vihear temple is in the middle of the conflict and in July 2008 he was listed as World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO (Preah Vihear).
In August 2008, the Thai army occupies two new Khmer temples, Prasat Ta Moan Thom and Prasat Ta Krabey (Prasat Ta Kwai in Thai), which are also located on the same border of the mountain Dangrek but about a hundred kilometers to west over Preah Vihear.
Since then, the armies of Thailand and Cambodia have taken position along that border on the crest of the mountain. In 2011, several clashes were twenty deaths among the soldiers of both armies.
In order to facilitate access to positions of his army near the temple Prasat Ta Krabey, Cambodian soldiers have recently built an interesting transportation system to reach the crest of the mountain from the plain.
This transport device consists of an inclined cable car railway about 300 meters long and an aerial cable car. Its use is restricted to military, but apparently it has been used by some tourists, under escort, as evidenced by the videos below.

PS:
The first section of the Stanserhorn-Bahn is still a funicular! The two other sections which were also funiculars were replaced by an aerial cable car in the 70s. Now this aerial cable car is dismantled and replaced by a complete new one… the CabriO® !

A water ballast counterweight aerial cable car

Obermatt – Unter Zingel. Both curiosity and a historic monument, this is one of the last aerial cable car still in use that works with water ballast counterweight !
It was built in 1921 by Niederberger and is located near the Obermatt station straddling the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden. It connects Obermatt (670 m) to Unter Zingel located at 1257 meters.
Unfortunately it seems in very poor condition and its use is very risky.
Its access is not free. 1 CHF to go up, and 0.5 CHF to go down.
It requires that a person, may be its owner Mathis Melk on the video, be present at the station to fill the tank of the car down.
To prevent the person, just shake a strong cable which prevents the owner you want to go up.
The cabin filled with water is automatically drained when it reaches the lower station.
Speed 45 km / h
Length 1.5 ‘
150% maximum slope
(Check that you can still use it)

MĂĽrrenbahn, the ‘Machine’ at GrĂĽtschalp

GrĂĽtschalp,.. this is the transfert station between the aerial cable car and the railway to MĂĽrren. At GrĂĽtschalp, there is an extraordinary machine which is in charge to exchange the pallets between the aerial cable car and the railway.
This machine that I call ‘The Machine’ is made of a funicular and also a cog wheel railway!
See and appreciate the complete movements of this genius machine! The same machine was also there when the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen MĂĽrren funicular was is use…

Remains of funicular Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen MĂĽrren

The funicular Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-MĂĽrren (BLM) was opened in 1891 and has been dismantled on Friday April 25, 2006 after 115 years! On Friday December 15th, 2006, was the opening of the new aerial cable car on the same site as the present funicular. On August 29, 2010 I was in the aerial cable car to record the remaining of the old funicular.
As you can see the old funicular was completly removed.
Only few meters of the old track have been kept, at Lauterbrunnen station, with rails, cable and rollers.
As a matter of interest, at 1:48 you can see chamois on the old funicular track.

Stanserhorn-Bahn – The CabriO® from Garaventa

Stanserhorn-Bahn has just annonced its new aerial cable car project to replace the actual one which links Kätli, the top station of the funicular, to the summit of the Stanserhorn.
It was a well kept secret… it is quite a revolutionary aerial cable car… the CabriO® from Garaventa.
The CabriO® will be composed of double deck cabins. The top deck will be an open air deck on which the passengers will be able to feel the sheer drop and the fresh air. The open deck will communicate to the bottom deck with a little stair. The open deck will have a capacity of 30 passengers and 60 passengers for the bottom deck.
The CabriO® will be suspended onto two carrying cables and pulled by two tractor cables. The cabins will not be suspended anymore but they will be supported by the cables which will be at the middle level between the two decks.
This new aerial cable car will open on May 2012.

Solution of Quiz #23

Grutas de Garcia, Mexico

It is the track of the old funicular to go to the famous Mexican caves, Grutas de Garcia near Monterey.
The funicular was replaced by an one cabin aerial cableway built by Doppelmayr and CWA in 2003.

This is the entire photo of quiz #23… you can see that the funicular is replaced by an aerial cableway!

A visit to the Montenvers (Chamonix)

When you go to Chamonix, below the Mont-Blanc, one of the most classic trip is to climb to the Montenvers, at the Mer de Glace glacier, by the cog wheel train.
The Montenvers train is certainly the most famous french cog wheel train.
Guess what… I had never been to the Montenvers and I had never taken this train… until last July!
I took practically all the swiss trains and funiculars… but in France, sorry, I have many gaps! ;-)

Here are some photos from my trip to Chamonix and Montenvers. Don’t forget to see the whole slideshow!

Montenvers Cog Wheel Railway (A)

The aerial cableway (B)

An aerial cableway is used to link the Montenvers train top station to the Mer de Glace glacier which is down the Montenvers. After the bottom station of the cable way, you have to take staircases to reach the glacier and the entrance of the cave inside the ice. Over the years, the glacier is melting down and more staircases are needed!
This is a pulsed aerial cableway, built in 1988 by SKIRAIL, 8 gondolas which are spread into 4 trains of 2 gondolas
