After several months off the steepest funicular in the world, at the Scenic World, is back in operation since March 29, 2013.

The Katoomba Scenic Railway has just been completely refurbished by Garaventa. The track was redone, the traction system has been completely changed and now has a new winch powered by two new engines. The funicular train is now composed of four new cars built by CWA.

The cars now have a panoramic glass roof that allows you to see the treetops during the journey. They also include gullwing doors.

The great novelty of this renovation is inside cars. Each seat can be inclined using a switch before departure with three possible positions: laidback at 40 ° to 52 ° traditional or cliffhanger at 64 °.

This new feature is the main selling point highlighted by Scenic World but beware, it is the seat angle which is variable and not the inclination of the track that is always the steepest in the world 128% (52 °) maximum.

  1. Haha I love their advertisement!
Did they add safety features like safety brakes on the train? Because I know that the previous one had nothing, just duplication of the cable…

  2. Jean-Philippe… I confirm that there was no safety brakes on the previous train… and I also confirm that there is no safety brakes on the new train either. The track is so steep that building enough strength into the track to stop a fully loaded train with track brakes was just impossible.
