In Funimag there is not only funiculars… there are also tramways… so today here is the Mulhouse tramway in Alsace.
My last visit in Mulhouse was in 1999, there was no tramway at this time. The Mulhouse tramway was opened in May 2006. Was I saw it few weeks ago I was very enthusiastic! This tramway is a very big success: effectiveness, frequency, comfort, design… I really liked the design and the public address system. The trains have a nice yellow colour and inside it is yellow, grey and black (design by Peret, the spanish designer)… really nice! It really changes from sad colour design we can see in a lot of places. The design was chosen by the inhabitants of Mulhouse themselve! The public address system is from Pierre Henry, the famous composer. The stations with their arches were designed by Daniel Buren. All along the two lines, they are scultures from Tobias Rehberger.
So… I did not recognized the 1999’s Mulhouse … I was really impressed by the great integration of the tramway in the town and by the great new urbanization of the streets.
In 2010 Mulhouse tramway will be extended to Thann and Kruth… and the tramway will use the normal train lines! It will be a ‘tram-train’ as Karlsruhe tramway is.
The funicular of Passo della Mendola is stopped during April… the cars will be replaced by two new cars built by Sigma Composite.
Sigma Composite is a french compagny located at Veyrins (IsĂšre) which is part of POMA Group.
Sigma Composite builds cabins for aerial cable ways and it also built the cabins ot the funicular of Montmartre (Paris).

The Southend-on-Sea Borough Council finally decided to repair the cliff lift and to replace the old car by a new one to comply with the Disability Discrimination act.
The main carriageway supporting the 4ft 6in gauge track and 1ft 9in gauge counterbalance track is covered in scaffolding and the entire structure is being repaired with track to be replaced.
Good news! Hope that Southend will be an exemple to save the St Nicholas Cliff Lift at Scarborought!
Southend-on-Sea – L’ascenseur est en cours de remplacement
This really the season for refurbishing and renovating!
Seriously, it is during the inactivity period that the funiculars are overhauled and revised.
Here it is at the Grand Hotel Giessbach, on the Brienz lake, there is the oldest Swiss funicular! For its 140 birthday, the old cars have removed and the wooden bodyworks have been refurbished and controled for the security directives.
On Merch 25, 2009, the two wooden bodyworks have been reinstalled on their chassis. A Kaman K-MAX helicopter was used for these operations.
See below, four videos of the manoeuvring…
