Back to Märjelen again… ( Aletsch Glacier )

Saturday August 19, 2006.Seven years later, I am back to the Aletsch Glacier (Canton of Valais, Switzerland)!
Two days spent at Bettmeralp to make another hiking to Märjelen!
Sept ans après, je suis de retour au glacier d'Aletsch (canton du Valais, Suisse) pour un week end à Bettmeralp et pour faire une autre marche vers Märjelen!

Märjelen is a mythical place for me. I have always been attracted by Märjelen, located at the elbow of the Aletsch glacier. I wish I could see the Märjelen lake with icebergs on it! But every time I go there, the lake is empty and the icebergs are laying at the bottom of the lake.
My first visit to the Aletsch glacier was in october 1987 and my first hike to Märjelen was in october 1990. In September 1999, I went back to Märjelen and on the second day of my vacations I returned to Märjelen and when I was in the real bottom of the empty lake I slipped and broke my arm!
Details of the walk: Bettmeralp – Moosfluh – Märjelensee -Tünnel de Tälligrat – Fieshalp/Kühboden – Bettmeralp (8 hours with one hour at Gletscherstube restaurant to eat rösti!)

On Sunday August 20, 2006… I took advantage of being in the upper Rhone valley to make a new visit to my train, the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke). In fact I walked all along the Oberwald Gletsch section, the unfinished section which will be open for the train in 2008.
