Presentation

The Grotte des Demoiselles is located in the north of the Hérault department. The cave was not dicovered recently but it was scientifically explored by Edouard Alfred Martel in 1897.

It is in 1931 that the cave is opened to the public. The main particularity of this cave is that you have to go up (more than 50 meters) to reach the entrance. So to facilitate the access a funicular was built before the opening to the public.

It is interesting to note that to reach the cave Aven Armand you have to use a funicular which is going down... and to reach the cave Grotte des Demoiselles you have to take a going up funicular!
